Halloween collectibles are among our favorite collections at St John Antiques. We have a case full that we display year around. When families come into the shop, the little ones are automatically drawn to that case. I usually ask if they are “scared” and the answer is always a resounding “NO.” They like the Halloween case better than the antique toy case.
The Halloween collectibles at St John Antiques range in age from the early 1900s to the 1950s. On our shopping trips throughout the US we look for the best of Halloween. We seldom find great pieces in Texas. Some of our favorites are the pre World War 2 German items including the thin paper mache’ jacks, candy containers and candle holders and veggie people. The veggie people are typically candy containers, given out at kids parties. One Germany jack we have currently is the largest of its kind we’ve seen at 8 inches diameter. Some of the best Germany pieces are cats and the devil. Devils and witches always bring premium prices.
We also carry some really nice USA or Japan made paper mache’ and cardboard jacks including a great devil jack and a not so great devil jack. The devil jacks are highly sought after. Other Halloween collectibles include plastic and tin horns and noise makers and plastic candy holders from the 50’s. These were usually produced in Japan.
Finally, we have a substantial collection of Halloween post cards. These were sent out in the early 1900s up till WW 1, then for whatever reason, they lost favor. The easiest way to describe these postcards is “wonderful.” When you find them for little money while searching thru stacks of postcards, grab them up.
